For the Summer Semester 2024 we would like to invite all interested listeners to the lectures of our series "Forum Geotechnik".
The event will be given on Thursday, 18:15 - 19:45 in the lecture hall BS II of the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

Afterwards, the discussion with the speakers will be continued with rolls and beer in our institute library. You are invited to join us as well.

Extreme flooding in NRW in 2021 from the perspective of the WVER as dam operator

Flood events do not stop at district, association or state borders! The extreme flooding that occurred in the WVER association area in July 2021 was not only a major event for this area, but also for the Dutch province of Limburg as a downstream riparian of the Rur. The WVER dams can provide significant flood protection. The safety of dams and the possible management of dams, taking into account the waters flowing downstream of the dams, play a decisive role here. The presentation will show the performance and limits of dams during the extreme flood of July 2021 in NRW.

Metro Sydney City & Southwest - 31 km TBM tunnel through the heart of Sydney

This year, the Sydney Metro is due to open to passengers on the City & Southwest lot. With a length of approx. 31 km, this lot represents a central section in the expansion of the metro network in Sydney. The line, which is being driven by a total of five TBMs, runs over 15.5 km in twin-tube tunnels connected by a total of 58 cross-passages. The undercrossing of the central business district of Sydney and the Sydney Harbour
Harbour parallel to the Harbour Bridge were just two of the challenges in the planning and execution of the project. The presentation provides an insight into the various aspects and geotechnical constraints in the execution planning of the tunnels and cross-passages.

ABS Hagen-Siegen-Hanau meets TiT - Eine mögliche Variante der Tunnelaufweitung unter Eisenbahnbetrieb

The double-track, electrified Ruhr-Sieg line is an important element of the regional transport and settlement structure. The core of the measure is the widening and modernisation of ten tunnels with a total length of 4.2 km. Deutsche Bahn is thus creating a more robust rail network for passenger and goods trains in the region. In addition, the expansion of ten tunnels for modern freight transport supports the ecological turnaround in transport. The project is currently in the preliminary planning stage and uses innovative methods such as 3D visualisation (BIM method). This enables better planning quality and is useful for the challenging topography of the low mountain range route and for the inner-city location of some project sections. In-depth geotechnical investigations of the tunnels were carried out in 2021/2022. The use of the tunnel-in-tunnel method (TiT) is currently being examined for the construction work. This innovative method allows construction work to be carried out while trains are running.
